A number of eminent dignitaries participated in the two-day workshop organised by Focus Orissa Forum on Climate Change here in Bhubaneswar to discuss on the adverse effects of climate change occurring now-a-days.
Orissa was given the utmost importance in the workshop as natural calamities have been occurring here every year without any respite. Loss of lives and destruction of property has been the natural outcome.
Delayed arrival of monsoon, lesser winter days in western Orissa, increase in the number of low pressure formations in Bay of Bengal, loss of bio-diversity and livelihood imbalances have been the adverse consequences of climatic changes in Orissa.
\\\"Shifting people and rehabilitating them during natural calamities has been a major challenge for us. We have dealt with the problems effectively and have been successful in minimizing loss of precious human lives. More problems lie ahead of us if we don\\\'t address the problem of climate change with utmost urgency,\\\" said Manmohan Samal, minister, revenue and disaster management.
Floods this year in the state have strengthened the fears about the ongoing climatic changes occurring due to global warming and greenhouse effect. Besides, drought has been frequently occurring in eight districts of western Orissa for the last three decades. Apart from this Orissa\\\'s mangroves have been severely affected by frequent cyclones.
\\\"Orissa has a fair share in climatic change. Rise in temperature during summer and beach erosion in Puri clearly indicate that Orissa is going to have a tough time in near future,\\\" said Santosh Mishra, Chairman CII, Orissa chapter.
The numbers of seasons have become irrelevant now. For instance, the state has been experiencing increasing temperature not only in summer but also it continues till December. With temperatures soaring above 45 degrees celsius in summer death due to sunstroke has become a common feature.
\\\"Nowadays seasonal changes have become irrelevant due to frequent changes in climate. Rainfall has become erratic and is unevenly distributed. Whenever a disaster occurs it makes a number of statements reminding the selfish motives of human beings,\\\" said Nikunja Sunder Ray, special relief commissioner of the state government.
Ironically, Orissa\\\'s economy is heavily dependent on monsoon to a great extent. Other dignitaries present in the workshop were in complete agreement for stressing the need to stop rampant destruction of forests with utmost care to avoid the fury of nature in future.
